Sonic: The Hedgehog

Directed by: Jeff Fowler
Starring: James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz (as the voice of Sonic).

You might ask, why is a full grown adult seeing such a movie? Well, 1 week out of every 3  this full grown adult has lots of time to kill during the day. So matinees are easy. I also…liked??? this movie?

We meet Sonic on his home world, but he gets sent away by his adoptive mother? I don’t know, it’s based on a video game. Back story of the character wasn’t all that necessary. It jumps forward 10 years and Sonic has been in hiding but also causing mischief in fictional Green Hills, Montana. I always like seeing my home-state being represented on screen. Marsden plays a town sheriff who’s family has been protecting the citizens for Green Hills for 50 years. He’s tired of small town police work, and wants to move on to the big city of San Francisco. Sumpter plays his wife, who feels really out of place in said small town Montana.

Then there’s Jim Carrey. He made me laugh throughout the movie. It’s going to be why I look back and like it. His portrayal of Doctor Robotnik is wonderfully absurd. It’s the closest I think I have seen to an Ace Ventura performance in quite a while. Physical, ridiculous, bombastic, and a complete cartoon come to life. Robotnik is a government goon sent to find out the source of a multi-state blackout (Sonic.) Once Robotnik shows up to Green Hills the movie takes off from there.

Is this a thought provoking movie? No. Is this a CGI masterpiece? No. (I really want to see the original cut with the Sonic that creeps everyone out by his appearance.)

Definitely does not pass the Bechdel Test.

I had more fun at this movie than I did Birds of Prey. And Birds of Prey is without a doubt a better made movie. I like Sonic more.
